NBSGA Research Mandate

- A statement of mission for the role of the NBSGA in R&D is given as follows:

In support of the economic and environmental sustainability of the salmon aquaculture industry, the NBSGA will provide leadership and facilitate the transfer of knowledge to our members through a commitment to research and develop programs and projects.

The salmon industry, through the NBSGA Science Committee, established and implemented an Environmental Policy and Research and Development Policy. The committee has worked with government, university and private sector scientists to promote and conduct relevant science based initiatives. This committee continues to provide expertise to the NBSGA on matters of research and development.

ACAIRDN

- The NBSGA actively participates in Research and Development activities, and is part of the Atlantic Canada Aquaculture Industry Research and Development Network, also known as ACAIRDN. The four Atlantic Canadian Aquaculture Associations have formalized this network, focusing on continual regional cooperation on research projects that are mutually beneficial for the aquaculture industry in each province. In addition, ACAIRDN continues to communicate industry R&D priorities to the aquaculture community, which includes
academia, funding agencies and regulators.

ACAIRDN has, and will continue to develop reports and technical resources for the Aquaculture Industry in Atlantic Canada. Please check back often for new additions.

Past R&D Projects

- Collaborative projects in which the NBSGA have been active participants include:

Genetics and Habitat Restoration
Working with DFO and leading private sector scientists in support of wild salmon conservation/preservation.

Environmental Management
Working with the Aquaculture Environment Coordination Committee to host a science workshop on priorities for developing comprehensive performance based standards.

Offshore Development
A groundbreaking technical and economic review of opportunities that will serve as a foundation for international collaborative work.

Closed Containment of Land-based Systems
A four year project in the Bay of Fundy to determine the feasibility of growing salmon in a closed containment system. The project concluded that the open ocean provides the best environment for growing salmon in an environmentally sustainable manner.

Juvenile Lobster
Collaboration with leading DFO Science, commercial fishermen, and salmon farmers to ensure aquaculture operations do not adversely affect this important resource.

The industry actively participates in communications research and management initiatives with other stakeholders in a continued effort to ensure high environmental standards and integrated sustainable development. This includes participation in semi-annual Bay of Fundy Stakeholder Forums co-chaired by the federal and provincial governments. At the forum, the industry presents information to, and receives information from, and discusses issues of mutual concern with other resource users.

Oceanography – collaboration with leading DFO scientists in numerous projects to better understand the interactions between the aquaculture farms and the environment.

Reports for additional R&D projects are available at the bottom of this page.

Ongoing R&D Projects

- The NBSGA is actively participating in several exciting R&D activities, listed below. Be sure to check back often for updates and links to Technical Reports for completed projects. For more information regarding these, or other projects, please do not hesitate to contact the R&D Coordinator.

Depletion of Emamectin Benzoate (SLICE ®) from Skeletal Muscle (and Skin) of Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) following a Multiple Oral (Dietary) 50ug/kg Dose Regimen, in Seawater at 10 +/-1oC; One Laboratory and Two Field-based Trials.

Environmental Management
The NBSGA is continuing to work with the NB Department of Environment on the development of the Environmental Performance Based Regulation and Management system, and hope to be in a position with government to fully implement the program by this April. We have recently completed revisions of the NBSGA Environmental Code of Practice.

Code of Containment
The NBSGA has been in the process of preparing the Code of Containment for Marine Salmon farms in New Brunswick. The Code will include provisions for establishing and operating sites, inspecting and auditing, and reporting of and responding to breaches of containment. It is expected that the Code will be completed in April 2007.

R&D Priorities
During the last several months, the NBSGA has been working on updating R&D priorities. We are in the process of re-convening the NBSGA Science Committee to determine the status of previously identified priorities, and ensure that the priority list adequately addresses the concerns of our members.

Offshore Aquaculture Development
The NBSGA has initiated Phase 2 of the Offshore Aquaculture Development project, and is in the process of meeting with Industry representatives to establish the R&D activities that are needed to support further development of offshore aquaculture in New Brunswick.

ISA Research Strategy, Control and Management Workshop

- A recent workshop held in Saint John, NB brought together leading researchers, government officials and industry members to address the serious issue of Infectious Salmon Anemia (ISA). ISA is caused by a virus that is naturally occurring in the wild. ISA cannot be transmitted to humans, but can result in serious economic impacts to salmon farmers. Workshop participants worked together to identify research priorities and management strategies that will improve the ability of salmon farmers to reduce their losses. A group of well respected industry leaders committed to working together to facilitate the development of research projects that will support management strategies. A copy of the report is available at the link below.

ISFA Sea Lice Workshop

- This one-day industry-led workshop was held in conjunction with AquaNor 2007, with the purpose of consolidating the state-of-knowledge of sea lice treatment products and methods, and identifying immediate needs and opportunities.

The idea for this Workshop was developed by ISFA members in March 2007, at the Boston Seafood Show. The New Brunswick Salmon Growers Association took the lead in organizing the speakers and the agenda for the Workshop.

The Workshop was well attended by industry, with representatives from industry, government and pharmaceutical companies traveling from Canada, USA, Chile, UK, Ireland, Iceland, Faroes, and Norway.

The main deliverable of the workshop will be a White Paper document that captures key issues and outcomes. This White Paper will have value to national and regional associations as they provide advice to local policy makers and regulatory agencies. In addition, the Workshop Proceedings will be distributed to participants.
